Agriculture program receives Rising Sun grant

Sammy DeBilzan shows off his cow breed cookie in Alana Bentley’s agriculture class. Jessie Clark Middle School’s agriculture program, one of the newest in Fayette County Public Schools, has received a one-time Rising Sun grant of $1,000 from the Kentucky FFA Foundation. Ag teacher Alana Bentley plans to use the funds to add more animals to her program. Eventually she wants rabbits or chickens that students can care for or even exhibit at shows.

Bentley said her courses have been popular in part because students know they have opportunities for hands-on learning. “We’re constantly moving in our classroom,” she said. “My students are learning about animal science and food science – we eat a lot of food in our class,” she laughed. “They’re happy to take notes because they know they’ll get to taste-test a steak at the end of the unit.”
