TLC team earns top honors at STLP State Championship

A team from The Learning Center received Best Project honors (grades 9-12 division) in the 2019 Student Technology Leadership Program State Championship at Rupp Arena. This group – Jamison O’Bryan, Anna Lawrence, Vionte Miles, Kolbee Squire, Austin Presley, and Christina Bowman – developed Project T.L.C., which empowers students to share their story about mental health, seek a lifeline, and gain the confidence to be themselves. TLC teacher Raven Evans is their mentor, along with STLP coordinator Courtney Grimes.

The students will next present their work at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference in Philadelphia, which runs June 23-26. This is one of the largest education technology gatherings in the world, with nearly 25,000 people in attendance last year.

The TLC team was one of four state champions selected from among some 1,800 competitors at Rupp. (Elementary, middle school, and technical champions were also crowned.) “Their project made it through three rounds of judging starting in the fall and received many, many compliments from the judges at all levels,” said Bob Moore, director of Technology in Fayette County Public Schools.
