Ms. Austin is Southern District Dance Teacher of the Year

SHAPE America logo SHAPE America’s 2021 honorees include BCE's Lydia Austin, the Southern District Dance Teacher of the Year, who advanced as a finalist for the national award in her category. SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators) presented the winners during this spring’s National Convention & Expo, a virtual event in mid-April.

Austin teaches dance and P.E. at Brenda Cowan Elementary, where she is serving in her second year. She earned a master’s in Kinesiology with an emphasis in teaching from the University of Kentucky. She also holds a dance certification K-12, elementary education certification K-5, and a minor in dance – all from UK. She has taught 16 years overall. “I want all of my students to be thinking movers,” Austin said. “Students not only get to be physically active when they come to my class, but they also have the chance to create. That’s what’s so cool about dance. Students get to express themselves through movement.”
