The girls’ “A” basketball team at Southern Middle School capped an undefeated season with a close win in the 2018 tournament, edging Beaumont 23-21 in the title game Dec. 14 at host Henry Clay High School. Peyton Plotts led the top-seeded Spartans with nine points and played solid defense. Jada Bell, who paced Southern offensively all season, showed some fight and determination in the fourth quarter. Other tournament standouts were Malaya Jackson, who tallied a career-high 19 points against Morton in the semifinals; Jennifer Zachman, who made key plays that sometimes went unnoticed; and Avery Dixon, with her hawk defense.
“This season was my first year coaching girls, and it was extra special,” said Coach Daryl Moberly. “The girls worked hard at practice, and that hard work paid off in the end.”
