The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches has selected Nick Runyon of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School as the 11th Region Girls’ Coach of the Year for 2021. He led the Bulldogs to a 14-3 record and a top seed going into the 43rd District tournament. Runyon, who joined Fayette County Public Schools in 2010, manages the district’s Experience-Based Career Education internship program (EBCE). He is in his sixth season as head coach at his alma mater after five years as an assistant.
“My coaching philosophy really only involves two major components – family and servant leadership,” he said. “I believe that a team is a family, and family supports, encourages, motivates, helps, and loves everyone no matter what their strengths and weaknesses may be. As a coach, I know that my role is to lead and be a role model. And the best way I know how to do that is to put my pride away and give the team everything I have, all the time.”
