Youth Journalism International salutes PLD Lamplighter
Youth Journalism International has awarded the PLD Lamplighter its 2020 “Courage in Journalism” honor. The student newspaper staff at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, which is among Excellence in Journalism contest winners representing seven countries on five continents, refused to slink away when authorities turned aside their effort to report on a public forum with U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
“For nearly 20 years, I’ve taught young journalists to be ethical, honest, and to pursue the truth at all costs. Year after year, I’m constantly amazed by the passion these young people have about the pursuit of truth with integrity and honor. We are completely overwhelmed by this international recognition of our efforts,” said Wendy Turner, Dunbar’s media arts teacher and PLD Lamplighter adviser. In praising her staff, she especially noted the work of senior Olivia Doyle, who plans to study journalism at Eastern Kentucky University this fall.
