Kentucky MATHCOUNTS awards college scholarships to top students
Even though this spring’s 2020 Kentucky MATHCOUNTS competition was canceled amid COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, several outstanding students from Fayette County Public Schools received scholarships anyway. When organizers used February’s chapter contest scores to assess the top 10 highest-ranking students, Joseph Vulakh of Tates Creek Middle School came in at No. 1 statewide and Jonah Hubert of Winburn Middle placed fourth. Winburn’s Justin Wong was sixth and Laura Tong ranked 10th. Joseph and Jonah get four-year, full tuition scholarships to their choice of the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville, while Justin and Laura receive four-year, $1,500 tuition scholarships to either school.
MATHCOUNTS represents the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers’ ongoing commitment to encourage sixth, seventh and eighth graders to develop leadership skills, problem-solving techniques, and a general understanding for solving problems in real-world situations while using their love for math. For questions, please contact state coordinator Edward Warren or FCPS math instructional specialist Natalee Feese.
