Grandparents As Parents conference set for Oct. 21
The Bluegrass Regional Grandparents As Parents (GAP) Coalition will host its 18th annual conference on Oct. 21 at the Clarion Hotel, 1950 Newtown Pike. This event provides resources and support for people who are raising a grandchild or another relative’s child. At last count, over 100,000 Kentucky children live in households headed by grandparents or relatives, with no parent present.
The cost is $10 for grandparents/relative caregivers and $50 for professionals (CEUs for social work and FRYSC), which covers all materials, a resource fair, and lunch. Attendees can also preregister for a free legal consultation with local attorneys.
Two coordinators of Family Resource Centers in Fayette County Public Schools help with the event. Mary Jo Dendy, who serves at Sandersville and Meadowthorpe elementaries, is co-chair of the conference planning committee; and Kate O’Ferral of Deep Springs Elementary coordinates the exhibitors.
“The GAP conference is an opportunity for kinship caregivers to gain information and learn about resources and services, and to meet others that are also raising relatives’ children full-time,” Dendy said. “The event can provide support for the many challenges kinship families face, such as financial, emotional, and legal. It’s important for the caregivers to know they are not alone.”
