FCPS to discontinue widespread temperature checks

Marlene Helm Fayette County Public Schools will follow the Kentucky Department of Education’s update of Healthy at School Guidance and starting April 8 will no longer screen students for temperatures before they ride the buses or enter school buildings. “We discussed this new information with the health experts from the Health Department, and they are in agreement with this change,” Acting Superintendent Marlene Helm told families in her weekly message.

She encouraged people to monitor their children for signs of illness and keep them home if running a fever. Staff will continue to take the temperatures of students who experience illness while at school. Rapid testing is an option for those who display symptoms of COVID-19.

On another front, the district continues to face intermittent challenges with bus driver staffing. “Changes with our transportation supports have made a difference, and we have only had a handful of routes cancelled or delayed,” Helm said, noting, “It is critical that families have accurate contact information on file so that we can reach you about last-minute changes.”
