Fayette soon to have two new members on school board

Lexington voters have picked high school teacher Tyler Murphy to represent District 2 on the Fayette County Board of Education. He edged psychologist Shambra Mulder by 126 votes out of some 14,000 cast. Local attorney Doug Barnett has held the District 2 seat since 2010 but decided not to seek re-election in fall 2018.

Murphy, 30, lives in Lexington but teaches in Boyle County. State law allows educators to serve on a school board as long as they work in another district.

Shortly before the Nov. 6 election, Kentucky Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis appointed former teacher Will Nash to Fayette’s District 1 school board slot. Nash, 35, replaces Melissa Bacon, who was board chair when she resigned in late August to care for her elderly mother.

Nash, who works in professional development for educators, will serve for the coming year, and the District 1 seat will be up for election in fall 2019.
