Douglass Basketball Teams Advancing in 11th Region Tournaments

The Frederick Douglass girls defeated Bryan Station 56-43 on Feb. 24 for the 42nd District Tournament championship. Senior point guard Jer Myra Christian had 20 points, and reserve Jaelee Knowles pulled down 10 rebounds. Meanwhile in the 43rd District finals, Tates Creek fell to Lexington Catholic 54-39.

The three teams from Fayette County Public Schools advanced to the 11th Region Girls’ Tournament, but only Douglass made it past the first round. The Broncos knocked off Great Crossing and Madison Central, and will play Lexington Catholic in the finals at 6 p.m. March 4 at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

On the boys’ side, Frederick Douglass routed Scott County 69-39 for its fourth straight 42nd District Tournament title. Armelo Boone, selected as the MVP, recorded 14 points, four steals, three assists, and six rebounds. The Broncos advanced to the 11th Region Boys’ Tournament as the lone representative of FCPS. They play Madison Central in the semifinals at 1 p.m. March 4 at EKU.
