Winburn Team Wins Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition
A group from Winburn Middle School – including Joyce Liu, Nathan Song, Zachari Ye, and Yi Zheng – took first place in the 2023 MATHCOUNTS regional competition on Feb. 18 at the University of Kentucky. They will advance to the March 25 state contest along with runner-up SCAPA at Bluegrass teammates Haasini Beeram, Syd-Nee Tyler, Amay Xu, and Kyle Yang.
The top-scoring individual in the regional and winner of a four-year $3,000 scholarship from UK’s College of Engineering and a four-year $1,000 scholarship from Western Kentucky University was Tommy Moseley of Beaumont Middle School. He also won a $500 scholarship from Kentucky MATHCOUNTS.
Along with the top two teams and Tommy, others qualifying for state were Brandon Tedja of Edythe J. Hayes, Gauri Joshi of Winburn, Michael Fan of Tates Creek, and Aaron George of Winburn. They were among more than 200 competitors from area middle schools. The school winners from Fayette County Public Schools were:
