STEAM Academy Student Reaches 'National Master' Status in Chess

Evan SammonsEvan Sammons, a junior at the STEAM Academy, is the first K-12 chess player in Kentucky to achieve the rank of national master since 2007 and only the fourth student overall to ever reach that mark in the Commonwealth, according to the Kentucky Chess Association. He recently won the Kentucky Action Championships, a Louisville tournament for adult players, and officially became a national master as his rating edged above the 2200 threshold. (A chess rating is a tool that helps measure a player’s probable performance against another opponent.)

Local chess coach Alan Trimble, who guided Evan and teammates at Beaumont Middle School to the 2020 state championship, saluted his progress. “Evan has dedicated himself to studying the game at an intense and high level,” Trimble said. “It’s unbelievable the work he has put in, and I am so incredibly proud of him.”
