Douglass Caps Undefeated Season with Class 5A Football Championship
Just five years after the opening of Frederick Douglass High School, the Broncos’ football team has brought home the Class 5A state title. “They’re always going to remember their brothers here. They’re always going to remember this game and their whole season,” Coach Nathan McPeek said after the 28-7 win over Bowling Green. “They’re going to go down in history as being the first ever state champion of our school and our football program.”
Third time was the charm for Douglass, which also played in the 2019 and 2021 finals. This time, MVP Ty Bryant and his fellow seniors made sure the Broncos (15-0) celebrated at Kroger Field.
Douglass scored first on Cole Carpenter’s 37-yard pass to Tylon Webb. Bryant, who snagged an interception on defense, scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter. The Broncos found the end zone twice more – on a 21-yard reception by Thomas Howard and a 26-yard catch by Cameron Dunn.
The Broncos’ defense stood tall in the second half, limiting Bowling Green to one first down and 46 total yards in the Dec. 3 finale.
