Poem by a Mary Todd fifth grader takes top honors in MLK contest

A fifth grader at Mary Todd Elementary, Kiana Pineda Mack, took first place in the elementary poetry division of the 2022 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Art, Poetry, & Essay Contest. This year’s theme was “My Vote, My Voice, Does It Matter?” In the intermediate elementary art division, Northern fifth grader D’zandrae Hartley received honorable mention. The Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission announced the award winners during a virtual MLK Day celebration.

The annual contest is open to students from kindergarten through high school across the Commonwealth. Building on King’s passion and leadership, they try to creatively express how remembering the past can help build a brighter future. They also reflect on King’s legacy of service to explore innovative approaches to positive social change.
