Hayes girls win ‘A’ league’s 2021 basketball tournament

The girls’ “A” league basketball team from Edythe J. Hayes Middle School knocked off top-seeded and unbeaten Leestown 39-30 for the 2021 Fayette County tournament championship. It was a fitting matchup since the Panthers’ only loss this year was to Leestown in the season opener. “It took a team effort to win a hard-fought battle against a tough, well-coached Leestown team,” said Hayes coach Mike Graves.

The No. 2 seeded Panthers advanced through the bracket with wins over Tates Creek (38-23) and Crawford (24-31) before facing Leestown in the Dec. 8 finals, where they fulfilled their motto, #JustWinYourLastGame. Despite the foul trouble, Hayes got balanced scoring from starters Mikalee “MK” Bennett and Kanna Shiozaki with 8 points apiece, Reagan Gregonis with 6, Fern Frost with 5, and Ella Smith with 4. Seventh graders Ashlyn Spivey chipped in 8 points, and Kenley Cornelison pulled down several key rebounds.

The varsity (eighth grade) team also included Khloe Bertoch, Jarynn Bowman, Brinley Dumphord, Jackalyn Jones, Kamryn Jones, and Shyanne Moore. Helping Graves with coaching at Hayes were Kelsey Meece, Lauren Moss, and Dale Smith.
