No. 3 seed Southern wins out in ‘B’ girls’ basketball
The Southern Middle School girls edged fifth-seeded Bryan Station 34-33 in the finals of the FCPS “B” league basketball tournament. The Spartans advanced through the 2021 bracket with victories over Edythe J. Hayes (44-27) and No. 2 Morton (35-22) before meeting Bryan Station, which had upset top-seeded Jessie Clark in the semifinals.
Southern finished its season with an 11-2 record. Kaleigh Potts and Alexis Bazzell paced the Spartans in scoring, steals, and assists, and LeeAnn Knapp averaged seven rebounds per game. “The Spartans were led by an awesome rotation of players who played big minutes in each game,” said coach Ryan Ratliff, who praised those three plus teammates Harper Lipsett, Addison Tenzca, Kylie Howell, Lydia Krupp, and Braelyn Ruehrwein.
The squad also included Aliyah Baird, Violet Hamrin, Kylie Jones, Megan Predmore, Faith Sweazy, and Caroline Williams. Assisting Ratliff with coaching at Southern were Ishmael Thomas and Natiera Hinton.
