Dominant win propels Douglass into 2021 championship football game

In Class 5A football action, No. 2 Frederick Douglass defeated No. 3 Owensboro 35-7 on Nov. 26 in the state semifinals. Samuel Cornett completed 14 of 19 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown, and a handful of backs rolled up 178 rushing yards. On defense, Caden Johnson recovered a fumble and Jeremiah Lowe picked off two passes. With the win, Douglass secured a championship matchup against South Warren. Kickoff is 4 p.m. Dec. 4 at Kroger Field.

Did you know? Douglass head coach Nathan McPeek was offensive coordinator when the Broncos lost to Covington Catholic 14-7 in the finals two years ago.

In the 2021 postseason, Douglass knocked off Southwestern 37-6 to make it three straight KHSAA regional titles. Ty Bryant paced the Broncos with 70 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the Nov. 19 matchup, while Samuel Cornett completed 12 of 18 passes for 126 yards.

Meanwhile in Class 6A action, No. 15 Paul Laurence Dunbar (7-6) closed out its season with a 43-7 loss to No. 7 Madison Central. The Bulldogs’ lone score came on KaMarion Robinson’s 10-yard run in the second quarter.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association splits each class’s field — east and west — for the regional championships, which make up the third round of the state football finals.

The previous Friday night, Douglass and Dunbar recorded big victories to advance. Dunbar rallied to defeat Tates Creek 41-34 for the Class 6A District 7 championship. KaMarion led the Bulldogs with 188 yards rushing and four touchdown runs. Also on Nov. 12, in the Class 5A District 6 title game, Douglass blasted Scott County 48-7 as Samuel completed 10 of 13 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Ty had a 51-yard TD reception, a rushing score, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
