Pride of the Bluegrass remains top marching band in Kentucky
The marching band from Lafayette High School is once again the Class 5A state champion. The 2021 title, secured Oct. 30 at UK’s Kroger Field, made it four in a row for the 212-member Pride of the Bluegrass. Top scores for their show “Peace of Mind” brought Lafayette’s total to 22 Governor’s Cups in the 35 years that the Kentucky Music Educators Association has organized this state championship. (KMEA canceled the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.)
KMEA’s annual competition culminated with six finalists from each of five classes based on school size and number of musicians. Judges considered musical performance, visual performance, and general effect – everything from posture, pacing, interpretation, and technique to creativity, artistry, intonation, and overall musicianship.
