KMEA District 7 taps Leestown principal as Administrator of the Year
Joe Gibson, the principal of Leestown Middle School, is the KMEA District 7 Middle School Administrator of the Year for 2021. Members of the Kentucky Music Educators Association selected him during their Aug. 30 fall conference, which met virtually because of COVID-19 precautions.
"Joe Gibson makes it as easy as possible to teach band. He's approachable, and he really listens to me. He supports me without micromanaging," said Charles "Chip" Weitkamp, Leestown's band director. "He's honest and fun. He makes the students understand that our musical ensembles are an important part of the school."
Weitkamp recalled one year after the bus schedules changed at the last minute, Gibson and other school administrators pitched in to drive his students back to campus after band assessments. "I know that he has my back," Weitkamp said.
Gibson taught sixth grade social studies at Leestown for 12 years and coached basketball before moving into an administrative role. In June 2015, he received an Outstanding Service Award from the Fayette County Association of Administrators. Gibson earned an associate’s degree from the Kentucky Community & Technical College System, a bachelor’s degree from Pikeville College, a master’s in Secondary Education from Georgetown College, and a master’s degree and Rank 1 certification in Educational Leadership from Eastern Kentucky University.
