Lafayette girls & Douglass boys are runners-up in 11th Region basketball tournaments

Fayette County Public Schools won’t have a contender in the 2021 Sweet Sixteen Tournaments after the Lafayette girls and the Frederick Douglass boys lost in the 11th Region championships March 27 in Richmond.

Lafayette, which had a tough shooting night, was runner-up to Franklin County after falling 53-38 at Eastern Kentucky University. The Generals had defeated Scott County and Madison Southern to reach the title game. In the other FCPS storyline, Tates Creek – which won only four regular-season games – had to drop out after a first-round victory over Frederick Douglass because of COVID-19 protocols. The forfeit meant Franklin County advanced.

The region winners face off April 7-10 in the 2021 Girls’ Sweet Sixteen Tournament at Rupp Arena.

On the boys’ side, Douglass finished as runner-up after dropping an 80-62 decision to Madison Central. Kai Simpson paced the Broncos (19-2) with 18 points. Douglass had edged Paul Laurence Dunbar by one point in the semifinals after eliminating Madison Southern in the first round.

The region winners square off in the KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen Tournament, set for March 31 through April 3 at Rupp.
