Dunbar boys knock off Henry Clay for 11th Region soccer crown
In boys’ soccer, Paul Laurence Dunbar upset defending state champion Henry Clay in a 1-0 shootout for the 11th Region championship and a berth in the 2020 state tournament. Bulldogs goalie Hunter Abshire was tournament MVP for his Oct. 22 efforts. Led by first-year Coach James Wray, Dunbar edged host Frederick Douglass 1-0 in the semifinals after eliminating Frankfort 2-0 in the first round. Dunbar qualified for 11th Region competition as the 43rd District winner, while Henry Clay was the 42nd District champion.

On the girls’ side, Lafayette was runner-up in the 11th Region tournament after falling 3-1 to Lexington Catholic in the Oct. 22 finals. The Generals, who qualified as runner-up out of the 43rd District, defeated Western Hills in the first round and Henry Clay in the semifinals at host Great Crossing.
