Several FCPS soccer teams qualify for 11th Region tournaments
In 2020 postseason boys’ soccer, defending state champion Henry Clay blanked Scott County 3-0 in the semifinals and Frederick Douglass 1-0 in the finals on a goal by Zakaria Shendera to claim the 42nd District championship. The Blue Devils, who have four returning starters off last year’s state title team, and district runner-up Douglass advanced to the boys’ 11th Region tournament, which began Oct. 18.
In the 43rd District, Paul Laurence Dunbar’s boys defeated Lexington Christian 3-0 in the semis and edged Lafayette 3-2 in the finals on a free kick by Jackson Gabbard as time expired. The Bulldogs and the Generals both moved on to regional play, which culminates in the Oct. 22 finals at host Douglass.
On the girls’ side, Henry Clay secured the 42nd District title with a 4-0 win over Scott County and a 3-0 decision over Sayre on a goal by Ellie Scorsone-Stovall and two from Addison Kenny. The Blue Devils, whose defense surrendered only three scores all season, advanced to the girls’ 11th Region tournament.
In the 43rd District, Lafayette’s girls were runners-up after falling 2-0 to Lexington Catholic. The Generals, who eliminated Dunbar 3-1 in the semifinals, made their first trip to the 11th Region tournament in 15 years. Action began Oct. 17 and concludes Oct. 22 at host Great Crossing.
