Jessie Clark & Hayes secure 2020 volleyball tournament titles

In volleyball action, Jessie Clark’s No. 1 seeded A-team defeated No. 2 Edythe J. Hayes (21-17, 21-11) on Oct. 14 for the 2020 FCPS middle school championship. In a turnabout in the B-league tournament, three seed Hayes upset No. 1 Beaumont (17-21, 22-20, 15-6) for top honors. The winning coaches were Caroline Ricks and Shelby Shanks, respectively. No GPA Award was presented this season with students in distance learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the earlier semifinal matchups, Jessie Clark’s eighth graders ousted four seed Southern, and Hayes knocked off No. 3 Beaumont in the A-tournament; meanwhile, Beaumont’s top-seeded seventh graders beat No. 4 Morton, and Hayes bested No. 2 Jessie Clark to advance in the B-league.

During the regular season this fall, Jessie Clark finished atop the A-league standings at 8-0, having lost only one game. Beaumont’s B-team also was undefeated until the tournament finals.
