Frederick Douglass cheerleaders place second in national competition
A squad from Frederick Douglass High School was runner-up in Large Varsity Division II at the 2020 UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship, which ran Feb 7-9 in Orlando, Florida. Lexington’s newest high school, which opened just three years ago, made it to the preliminary round in 2019.
“I am more than proud of my girls. They came out here and did what they had to do, and that was just hit a clean routine. We just made our town proud,” Coach Alexa Wingate told UCA. “We are taking off from here. We’re just ready to make a name for ourselves, and I think we did that this year.”
In other top-5 UCA results, Lafayette High School placed fourth in Junior Varsity Co-Ed, Edythe J. Hayes Middle School was fifth in the Small Junior High division, and Leestown Middle placed fifth in Junior High Non-Tumbling Game Day.
