Frederick Douglass to play for 5A state title in football

In the Class 5A football playoffs, undefeated Frederick Douglass High School outlasted Owensboro 28-17 in the Nov. 29 semifinals. Jaylin Bybee had two second-half interceptions, including a 40-yard pick six to seal the victory. On offense, Devin Neal scored twice, and quarterback Josh McClurg hit Dane Key on a fade route for a touchdown.

No. 2 Douglass (14-0), coached by Brian Landis, next takes on No. 1 Covington Catholic on Dec. 7 at Kroger Field in the 2019 state championship game.

In the Class 6A semifinals, Tates Creek dropped a 48-18 decision to defending state champion Male (14-0). The Commodores closed their season with a 9-5 record after their deepest postseason run since 2001.
