Rallies lift Tates Creek and Henry Clay to 2019 district baseball titles

A grand slam from Tates Creek senior Colin Burgess fueled a 7-5 comeback victory over Lafayette for the 43rd District baseball championship May 22. Reliever Noah Blythe got the win for the Commodores, and Blayne Deaton got the save. Larry Poynter coaches at Creek, which ended Lafayette’s streak of four consecutive district titles.

In the 42nd District, Henry Clay trailed by four runs but rebounded to defeat heavy favorite Scott County 9-6 on May 20 for the championship. Luc Morgan’s grand slam punctuated the six-run sixth inning as No. 3 seed Henry Clay logged its first district title in four years. The Blue Devils, led by coach Jordan Tarrence, had also upset second-seeded Frederick Douglass to advance.

In softball action, Lafayette defeated Tates Creek 9-1 for the 43rd District title, while Douglass was runner-up in the 42nd District.
