Dunbar junior a national silver medalist for essay writing

Stephen Yin, a junior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, received a silver medal at the national level of the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. His entry, in the Personal Essay & Memoir category, was titled “Meaning of a Chef.”

The nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers aims to identify teenagers with exceptional talent and bring their remarkable work to a national audience through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Each year, the alliance partners with more than 100 organizations across the country to facilitate local competitions, and students in grades 7–12 apply in 29 categories. In 2019, students submitted nearly 340,000 entries. The judges look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

Stephen was a gold-medal winner at the regional level, where several students from Fayette County Public Schools earned kudos.
