Dunbar’s Ballard named state’s School Psychologist of the Year

Patrick Ballard

Patrick Ballard of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School received the 2018 School Psychologist of the Year award from the Kentucky Association for Psychology in the Schools (KAPS). He also was the Central Kentucky Regional Cooperative’s winner and a statewide Best Practice Award recipient as he bested eight other nominees for the KAPS top honor during the Oct. 29-31 fall conference in Louisville.

A native of Paint Lick, Ballard is in his second year with Fayette County Public Schools. During his almost 20-year career, he has also worked in Scott, Franklin, Kenton, and Clark counties from preschool through high school levels. “So much of this job is about respecting others, meeting needs, and offering hope,” Ballard said. “If we actively pursue those goals, then we can bridge gaps and truly make a difference in the lives of students. Making those differences in the lives of students is what education is all about and what keeps me coming back.”

Ballard completed his undergraduate B.S. degree in Psychology and his Specialist in Psychology degree in School Psychology at Eastern Kentucky University. He has also been an educational surrogate recruiter and coordinator, an emergency mental health coordinator, and a community services liaison. His interests include school-based mental health services, crisis response and intervention, and community outreach.
