Liggins accepts baton at Superintendent's Leadership Institute
Acting Superintendent Marlene Helm handed off the baton to Demetrus Liggins as the 2021 Superintendent’s Leadership Institute (SLI) opened with his call to always put students first. “They’re 100 percent ours and 100 percent capable of success,” he told the audience of more than 300 principals, school administrators, and district leaders. “At the end of the day, it’s about our students. We have one job only, and that’s student success.”
Liggins, who will officially join Fayette County Public Schools on July 26, was back in town for the sixth SLI conference. Frederick Douglass High School hosted the three-day professional learning event, where this year’s theme was “One Band, One Sound, Marching On.” Liggins greeted the group in the auditorium with a few personal stories, saying, “I just want you to get to know who I am.” He credited his hardworking mother and grandmother along with dedicated teachers who did not let him slide by in school and maintained high expectations. “I had educators who refused to let my circumstance become my disability,” he recalled.
He outlined his current priorities as (1) faith, (2) family, (3) work, and (4) everything else. “It’s very important to try to have a balanced life,” he said, noting that people must first take care of themselves before they can take care of others. “I enjoy thoroughly what I do as an educator,” Liggins added. “I wake up every day excited to make a difference.”
Liggins also briefly touched on his educational philosophy, including such points as:
Base all decisions on what is best for students.
Find methods to make things work.
Never cease to learn, grow, and improve as a person and a professional.
Exercise an innovative mindset, and
Remember that relationships and leadership matter.
“Let’s not settle for good. Let’s be great,” Liggins urged his audience. “I’m glad you’re on the team. It’s going to be an awesome year!”
