Dual language immersion teacher runner-up for international honor
Lucia Fraile, the third grade dual language immersion teacher at Liberty Elementary, was runner-up for the 2021 Teacher of the Year Award presented by the Education Office of Spain to the United States and Canada. They recognized her excellent work as a teacher and cultural ambassador. To participate in this contest, Fraile organized a virtual intercultural event with students at Liberty and their peers from Sevilla, Spain. More than 200 students participated – interacting and conversing in English and Spanish and sharing their talents and hobbies. “One of the most important opportunities dual language learning opens to students is the access to experience and appreciate diverse cultures,” Fraile said.
Fraile was in her fifth year at Liberty, where she also taught kindergarten. She has 10 years of experience overall, including stints in Sevilla and in London, England. “I cannot stress enough the importance of connecting with the students, getting to know them, and of course the use of humor,” she said. “I try to make my students feel happy and safe in the class, which motivates them to learn both the language and the content.”
