Digital Art

Students produce digital art using software to create works as a means of personal expression.

1.  Students

  • An individual student competes.
  • The STLP Coordinator is responsible for making sure appropriate permission is obtained for student products to be displayed publically. Permission is kept on file at the school.

2.  Times

  • Products are judged before the STEM Fair.
  • The Awards Ceremony time will be posted on the main STEM Fair web page.

3.  Registration

  • Registration will open early January.
  • Registration and the posting of products with required documentation is due by February 21, 2020
  • The STLP Coordinator from each school is responsible for registration and uploading products.
  • Registration and product submission information and links are shared with STLP Coordinators on the STLP Google Team Drive.
  • The name registered will be on certificates. Please check spelling.
  • In the Manipulated Photo category, the original photo (taken by the student) must be submitted.
  • The school does not need to supply a STEM Fair judge for product judging.

4.  Limits

  • Two products per category per division per school may be submitted.
  • Two products may not be submitted from the same student in the same category.
  • The same product may not be submitted for 2 categories.

5.  Divisions

  • Elementary (K-5)
  • Middle School (6-8)
  • High School (9-12)

6.  Categories

  • Original Art:  Software is used to create an original drawing/painting which does not include preexisting art/images. Shapes and stamps included in the software may be used but not clip art.
  • Graphic Design:  Software is used to create and combine symbols, images and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas or messages. The product might be an original logo or other artwork that contains organized text or pure design elements such as shapes and color which unify the piece. All parts of the image, including photos, are created/taken by the student.
  • Original Photo: A digital camera is used to create an image. Photographs have no more adjustments than exposure, color intensity or correction, red eye removal, and cropping.
  • Manipulated Photo: A student uses a digital camera to create an image and uses the camera or software to manipulate the image. Digital images may have objects added or removed or filter effects applied. This includes photos with a combination of black & white and color. All parts of the image are created by the student. Original photo(s) will also be submitted. The image is disqualified if the original photo is not submitted.
  • Mixed Media:  Software is used to create original art. Preexisting art, images, shapes, clipart, etc. may be used as long as intellectual property and copyright rules are followed. Sources must be cited in the documentation. This category is for art that will not fit in one of the other art categories due to the definition of the category. We expect that all entries will need to cite source(s) and may need permission to use an image that belongs to someone else. (Note:  This category is different than the state category with the same name.)

7.  Documentation

  • PDF Format or Google Doc. (Note:  Microsoft Word document can be uploaded, right click open with Google Doc - and you'll have a Google Doc.)
  • Student created document includes title of product and explains the process/steps, including software and equipment, used in creating the product.
  • Information is given that would help the judge better understand the software/process used.
  • Document mechanics will affect document score.
  • If documentation not submitted, product will be disqualified.
  • Graphic Design documentation includes the purpose of the graphic.
  • Mixed Media documentation includes description of what is student created vs. borrowed. Sources are cited.
  • Mixed Media: If sources are not cited in the document and appropriate permission obtained if needed, product will be disqualified.

8.  File formats for Art

  • JPG is preferred for the art.
  • The student created document could be PDF or a Google Doc.
  • If products continue to be collected in a Google Drive, Google Drawings, PNG, and PDF may be submitted. Other file types may also open for the judges but be sure not to upload a file that requires special software the judge may not have available. 
  • Use school abbreviation and student name for product file names, such as LAN_JaneDoe

9. Rubrics

  • All products received are considered competitive and will be judged using the posted rubric.
  • Notice there is a different rubric for each art category.
  • Please share a copy of the blank rubric with the student before submitting the product.
  • A minimum score of 85 required to qualify for recognition. This includes first, second, or third place.
  • A copy of the scored rubric will be sent to the STLP Coordinator after the STEM Fair. The coordinator may determine if the score and comments are to be shared with the student.
  • Intellectual property and copyright rules for public display must be followed to be eligible for an award. Products not meeting this guideline will be disqualified.
  • Manipulated Photo: If the original photos are not submitted, product will be disqualified.
  • Mixed Media: If sources are not cited in the document and appropriate permission obtained if needed, product will be disqualified.

10.  Display

  • Digital art products will be electronically displayed at the STEM Fair.
  • Pieces may be printed for display at IAKSS or other locations.
  • Winning products will be displayed online.
  • Make sure you have permission filed at school for these items to be displayed.

11. Results

  • Winners will be announced at the STEM Fair Awards Ceremony
  • Copies of the scored rubrics will be sent to the STLP Coordinator within a few days of the STEM Fair.
  • It is up to the STLP Coordinator to decide how much of the scored rubric and comments to share with the students.

12.  Safety

  • All students practice ethical, safe, and legal behavior.
