'B' team brings home tournament title to cap basketball season
The boys' "B" basketball team from Leestown, seeded No. 2 in the 2021 countywide tournament, defeated No. 4 Beaumont 33-27 for the championship March 17 after eliminating third seed Hayes in the semifinals. Coaches Eddie Johnson and Ametrius Carter knew their Chargers would be special this season as the players brought toughness, basketball I.Q., and a willingness to compete in practice against Leestown’s bigger and stronger “A” team. The Chargers closed with a 7-1 record, the best finish for boys in 10 years. The only loss was the first game of the season, a 36-34 win by Beaumont. Then came payback in the tournament finals. “It was a great game and evenly matched, but this time Leestown played with that chip on their shoulders,” Johnson said.
