Leestown’s Vogel named School Social Worker of the Year
The 2019 Kentucky School Social Worker of the Year is Lori Vogel, a child guidance specialist at Leestown Middle School. She accepted the award from the Kentucky Association for School Social Work on Sept. 27 during its fall conference in Georgetown.
“I like to use the quote from Mother Teresa to guide my practice: ‘Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love,’” Vogel said. “I may not be able to change what is going on in a child’s life, but I can listen to them, comfort them, and be there when they feel no one else is.”
Vogel earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Kentucky and her licensed clinical social work credentials from the Kentucky Social Work Board. Before Leestown, she was a Title I school social worker at Northern Elementary and Jessie Clark Middle School and a child guidance specialist at Athens-Chilesburg Elementary. She has tallied 20 years altogether in Fayette County Public Schools. Previously, she worked three years as a school-based mental health provider at Julia R. Ewan, Northern, and Ashland elementaries. She also worked for Bluegrass Comprehensive Care Centers.
She and husband Paul Vogel have two children: Andrew, a senior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, and Abigail, a sixth grader at SCAPA at Bluegrass.
