Pride of the Bluegrass notches third consecutive state championship

Lafayette High School’s Pride of the Bluegrass has made it three in a row, winning another Class 5A marching band state championship Oct. 26 at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Top scores for the show “Seeking Refuge” brought Lafayette’s total to 21 Governor’s Cups. Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, which also has a rich history of success, finished fourth in the 2019 finals.

Lafayette’s most recent championships came in 2018, 2017, 2013, and 2012. Dunbar, which has earned seven state titles, last won in 2011 and 2010.

The annual competition features four finalists from each of five classes, which are based on school size and number of musicians. Judges consider musical performance, visual performance, and general effect – everything from posture, pacing, interpretation, and technique to creativity, artistry, intonation, and overall musicianship. The Kentucky Music Educators Association has organized the state championships since 1986.
