Douglass championship cheerleading team

Frederick Douglass High School earned first-place honors in the large division of the 2019 KHSAA competitive cheer state championships Dec. 14 in Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park.

“I can’t begin to express how proud I am of these girls. To have the chance to compete and represent our school at the state level is such an honor," said head coach Nicole Bersaglia. "This team has worked so hard and stayed so focused. They are strong, determined, humble, and amazingly talented. When we started two and a half years ago, I never imagined that this type of success would come so soon. We are so honored to be the first state champion team at Frederick Douglass!

"We have the most supportive parents, administration, athletic director, student body, and teachers in the entire state," she added. "The Douglass family is truly special, and the amount of love that has been shown to us brings me to tears. I will never forget our first time competing in the Competitive Cheer State Championship.”

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association recognizes competitive cheer as a sport activity along with archery, bass fishing, bowling, dance, and esports.
