Broncos close outstanding season as runner-up in Class 5A football
Making its first finals appearance in only the school’s third year of existence, Frederick Douglass charged in undefeated but lost a tough defensive battle, falling 14-7 to top-ranked Covington Catholic in the Class 5A football championship Dec. 7 at Kroger Field. The Broncos (14-1) struggled on offense all night, with Ty Bryant scoring the lone touchdown on a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter.
“It was critical plays,” said Douglass Coach Brian Landis. “In big ball games, that’s the difference … They executed those big plays and we didn’t. We’ll learn from it and move on.”
In postseason honors announced before championship weekend, the Kentucky Football Coaches Association named Walker Parks as Player of the Year in Class 5A District 6. The association also recognized Landis for leading his team to an undefeated regular season.
