Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

  • In an effort to prepare next-generation learners who are college- and career-ready, FCPS recognizes the need for students to be able to leverage wireless devices in the classroom to advance learning. The district also realizes many students in this mobile generation already have access to technology that could benefit their education if it could be used in school.

    Therefore, the Fayette County Board of Education authorized and funded an enterprise wireless network that embraces the use of personally owned devices by staff and students. Often referred to as a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative, it seeks to support students in anytime, anywhere learning that values their interests and learning styles.

    In the summer of 2013, FCPS finished upgrading the wireless infrastructure in all its schools. Now students can connect personal wi-fi devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones to the network using their district log-in credentials, provided that a signed Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is on file with the school. Usage of devices are at the discretion of individual teachers and schools.

    FCPS provides ongoing staff training so that teachers can make the most of personal technology in the classroom. Also, individual schools might provide additional information to students and families regarding their specific BYOD plan.

    Microsoft Office 365 for Education -- Students can download for free and install it on as many as five PC, Mac, or mobile devices.
