Out-of-Area Requests

In limited circumstances, a student may be permitted to attend a different school than the one serving their family's neighborhood.

Plug in the student's home address to see the assigned schools (elementary, middle, high):

SchoolSite Locator Tool

While not all schools are open to out-of-area requests because of space limitations, you may ask for your child to attend an eligible school.

The application for the 2025-26 school year will open in April after spring break. Placements are generally reviewed during June and July, but might come later for schools with high student enrollment.

The 2024-25 application remains open for families who have moved but want their child to remain in the same school through the current year.

Out-of-area application

Please keep in mind the criteria for applying are extremely limited, and because of capacity concerns, all students are encouraged to attend their assigned schools.

Note: If your reason for submitting an out-of-area request is not listed on the application, you do not meet the criteria to submit a request.

School board policy

  • Student–athletes who attend a school other than their resident-assigned school should contact the FCPS athletics director, Robbie Sayre, to review their eligibility status.
  • The student's parent/guardian is responsible for adequate and timely transportation to and from school.
  • The student is expected to demonstrate acceptable behavior, make academic progress, and be in regular attendance.
