A fourth-grade class at Rosa Parks Elementary is the first group in our state to earn the Kentucky Civic Seal at the elementary level. This honor recognizes they have not only mastered their social studies lessons but also taken extra steps to demonstrate good citizenship.
Caron Cron challenged her fourth graders to identify issues they were passionate about improving within their community, state, or the world. After selecting a focus area, each child conducted research to better understand the issue, explored potential solutions, and developed an actionable plan. Throughout the project, Cron’s class worked alongside University of Kentucky students also participating in the Kentucky Civic Seal initiative.
The Rosa Parks projects ranged from local issues like playground equipment, to social issues like bullying prevention, to broader concerns like global warming and regulation of AI.
“These scholars were all very well prepared, thoughtful, and passionate about their issues and represented Rosa Parks and Fayette County to the highest caliber,” said Aaron Davis, social studies instructional specialist for Fayette County Public Schools.
He also praised Cron for her leadership and support, adding, “It is exciting to see our younger scholars be engaged and find their voice, and to see how civic engagement opportunities are growing in our district and community.”
