Bus Monitor Tapped as Kids’ Champion for March

Bus Monitor Tapped as Kids’ Champion for March

Fayette County Public Schools has chosen Velinda Wilson, a bus monitor based at the Miles Point garage, as the Kids’ Champion for March 2025. Each month, our district recognizes an outstanding member of Team FCPS who makes a difference in students’ lives. Wilson displays exceptional dedication to students and embodies these key characteristics: innovation, advocacy, empathy, knowledge, and a positive attitude.

The person nominated Wilson wrote: “I work the car line in the morning at our elementary school, and about a month ago I started to hear and see some of the most amazing words and acts of kindness I have ever witnessed. So much so, I started to arrive at my designated post in the car line 5 minutes early just to see if Ms. Velinda's actions were a one-time thing. They were most certainly not! Her smile, kind words, hugs, high-fives, and well wishes to every student were so refreshing and uplifting that I wanted to share in her excitement for every student exiting the bus. I now report to the car line early every morning just to get my own day started in the way the students deserve. They genuinely love her. You can feel it. You can see it. I have to admit, day-to-day duties at work and home prevent us from seeing the goodness of people directly in front of us. What she does and how she represents herself and FCPS is truly without words. We need more people that interact with our students like Ms. Velinda in our homes, churches, community, and schools. What a blessing she is!”

Superintendent Demetrus Liggins surprised Wilson with balloons and the Kids’ Champion Award, sponsored by Forcht Bank. The Fayette County Board of Education will also salute her at their March 24 action meeting.

If you know a Kids’ Champion who advocates for students and fosters a positive environment where all can thrive, you can nominate them for this districtwide recognition!
