A team from Winburn Middle School earned top honors in the 2025 state MATHCOUNTS competition March 8 in Bowling Green. Congratulations to students Joyce Liu, Alex Wang, Samuel Myint, and Miranda Fan. Edythe J. Hayes Middle placed third with Brandon Tedja, Elliott Noel, Henry Maggard, and Tylor Chen.
“This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams, who have been practicing for this big event since mid-September,” said Natalee Mauney Feese, math specialist in our district’s Department of Teaching & Learning.
In the individual standings, Winburn’s Joyce Liu scored as runner-up overall, Tates Creek Middle’s Victor Gong placed third, and Hayes’ Brandon Tedja was fourth. Each received a full-tuition, four-year scholarship to either the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville.
Nearly 140 “mathletes” from 45 middle schools around Kentucky participated. The top-four individuals will represent our state in the national team competition May 11-12 in Washington, D.C.
Other top-10 winners from Fayette County Public Schools were Winburn’s Alex Wang and Samuel Myint, who each received a $1,500 per year, four-year scholarship to the University of Louisville.
