‘SUN Bucks’ Helps Buy Summer Groceries

The Summer EBT program, also known as SUN Bucks, returns in 2025 to help ensure that children have access to healthy food all summer long. This federal nutrition program provides $120 per eligible child to help cover grocery costs  when school meals are not available. The funds are loaded onto a debit-style EBT card, which can be used at grocery stores, farmers markets, and even online to purchase nutritious food. 

In Kentucky, the program is run by the Department of Community-Based Services (DCBS) in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education. 

Who is Eligible?

Children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals are eligible for Summer EBT. Most families who are already enrolled in programs like SNAP, KTAP, income-based Medicaid, or Kinship Care will be automatically enrolled for EBT and don’t need to do anything further.

How Do I Get Benefits?

If your family received Summer EBT last year and is still eligible, great! Your 2025 benefits will be loaded onto the same card.
