Students Tackle Equine Art in Farm Session

Project Culminates during Keeneland’s Fall Meet

Visual art students from Fayette County Public Schools enjoyed a June 17 masterclass with equine artist Jaime Corum. Hosted by Mill Ridge Farm, the two-hour session featured basic techniques, horse anatomy, and live sketching and drawing. 

At least a half-dozen high school participants will have two or three more sketching sessions at Keeneland, with the goal of producing 16x20-inch pieces of art. In one-on-one “Project Runway”-style workshops, a professional equine artist will advise them on their work. The hands-on learning experience will culminate with a visit to the Nov. 12 Sporting Art Auction at Keeneland. 

The project was organized by FCPS staffers Rachel Losch and Michael Holdren along with Thoroughbred Daily News cartoonist Remi Bellocq, who hope to establish an Equine Arts Scholarship Fund for the next generation of young talent. 

“Whether it comes in the form of funny cartoons or stunning oil paintings on canvas, it is imperative that we inspire and support our future equine artists. Our sport needs it, and I hope this is only the first step,” Bellocq said. “Our thanks to Alice and Price Bell at Mill Ridge for allowing us access to their beautiful Mill Ridge Farm. But a special thanks to Option, Mill Ridge’s teaser stallion, for being such a wonderful and patient model,” he added.
