FCPS Receives Independent Review of Budget Practices

FCPS Receives Independent Review of Budget Practices

Statement from Superintendent Demetrus Liggins:

Fayette County Public Schools thanks the law firm of Tueth Keeney Cooper Mohan Jackstadt P.C. for its independent review into the district’s budgeting practices. The release of this report reflects our continued commitment to openness and clear communication with our community.

The report finds no evidence of intentional misconduct by district personnel. However, it identifies significant systemic deficits in budgeting and financial processes, as well as breakdowns in communication and collaboration, that must be addressed.

These findings are being taken seriously. As with all district operations, ultimate responsibility rests with me as superintendent, and ensuring strong fiscal stewardship of taxpayer resources remains a top priority. For that reason, steps were taken in August to place the finance and budget departments under my direct oversight, and I continue to strengthen internal communication, coordination, and accountability measures. I am reviewing this investigation’s conclusions and recommendations to determine what additional actions are needed to strengthen the district’s financial practices.

Importantly, FCPS is currently operating under a balanced budget with a contingency fund well above state requirements, and our most recent annual audit also resulted in a clean opinion.

We will continue redefining our processes to ensure our operational and financial practices match the high standards our students, staff, and community deserve. Our focus remains steady: Support student success while responsibly stewarding public resources.
