Douglass HS & UK Students Bond over Teaching Careers

Douglass HS & UK Students Bond over Teaching Careers

Future Educators Learn from College Peers with Common Interests

For over three years, a dynamic partnership between Frederick Douglass High School and the University of Kentucky’s College of Education has been transforming the journey of aspiring educators. Through hands-on learning, meaningful mentorship, and exposure to career pathways in education, FDHS students gain clarity and confidence in their future. Meanwhile, the UK students sharpen their leadership and mentoring skills, making the collaboration mutually beneficial!

The program expands each year — not only in the number of participants but also in the depth of relationships fostered between high school and college students. This ongoing partnership continues to open doors and inspire Douglass students to envision themselves as educators.

In a recent session, the day began with a panel of UK students sharing their experiences in navigating college life, choosing education as a major, and discovering the rewards and challenges of pursuing a career in teaching. Douglass students had the opportunity to ask questions and talk openly, gaining valuable insights into what it takes to succeed in higher education and the teaching profession.

Afterward, Douglass students met one-on-one with UK students in a hands-on workshop focused on lesson planning. Together, they explored strategies for incorporating social-emotional learning into the classroom – emphasizing the importance of cultural awareness, empathy, and student engagement. Using their growing knowledge of curriculum design, the Douglass crew worked collaboratively to create meaningful and age-appropriate activities for elementary children. Later this semester, they will implement these lessons in real classrooms, further developing their instructional skills and confidence as future educators.
