Top Takeaway: KSA State Testing Results

At Monday night's regular meeting of the Fayette County Board of Education, Assistant Superintendent Bill Bradford shared highlights of the 2024-25 Kentucky Summative Assessments and progress throughout FCPS. Among the key points: Our district continues to outperform the state at all levels, and three-quarters of our schools achieved medium, high, or very high ratings. Additionally, two out of three schools posted increases in overall scores, and graduation rates continued to rise.

"These are truly remarkable results, and it has a ripple effect. These are numbers that businesses and potential employers look at," said board Chair Tyler Murphy. "This is indeed a point of celebration and a point of pride."

Student Spotlight: Lafayette Jazz Ensemble

Fine Arts Director Katherine Lowther introduced a video of Lafayette High School's jazz ensemble performing "Livin' Larger Than Life," featuring alto saxophonist Kargan Caswell, bass player Anna Vandemark, and drummer Ransom Raines. The Lafayette group -- one of only five jazz ensembles selected -- will present this piece next month at the prestigious Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago.

Kids' Champion for November

Board members and Superintendent Liggins congratulated our districtwide Kids' Champion for November: Damon Sexton, the Family Resource Center coordinator at Sandersville Elementary.

Community Partner Spotlight: KC7 Foundation

Also under the Superintendent's Report, the board learned more about the FCPS partnership with the KC7 Foundation, one of our Golden Apple Award winners. Bryan Quillen, cybersecurity instructor at The HILL, explained how he uses the Cyber Detective Game in class to bring the lessons to life, and two high school students shared how they have benefited.

Other Agenda Highlights

Under action items, the board signed off on the monthly financial report for October.

Additionally, the board received the district's FY25 financial audit, which will be added as an action item at the Dec. 8 planning session. This annual report was delayed by factors outside the district's control.

The board postponed action on the recommendation from its Audit Committee to award the contract to Weaver and Tidwell for an external audit, opting to await more details about the full scope of work planned by the state's Auditor of Public Accounts.

Under discussion items, board members considered clarifications and adjustments in their governance manual that will be thoroughly vetted by legal counsel for compliance with policy and law. (The governance manual is a set of operational norms developed collaboratively to promote efficient and effective governance to better support students, staff, and families.)

Additionally, Board Counsel Josh Salsburey noted the first step toward collective bargaining is for FCPS employees to decide if they want to bargain and which organization they want to represent them, which does not involve school board action.
