Board Buzz: Auditors Tag Key Problems

Board Buzz: Auditors Tag Key Problems

At the Aug. 3 planning session, the Fayette County Board of Education heard a summary of findings from an independent budget and expense audit, which the board commissioned. It focused on three primary areas:

  • Budget Process Review
  • Travel & Event Expense Review
  • Data-Driven Risk & Variance Analysis

The audit -- conducted by external accounting and advisory firm Weaver, L.L.P. -- detailed past control gaps, outdated administrative policies, and challenges that Interim Chief Financial Officer Kyna Koch and our finance team have already been actively working to fix. Weaver's findings and suggested improvements will guide immediate and future changes in financial governance, internal controls, and operational workflows in Fayette County Public Schools.

“Now that we have this picture, we will not consider this finished until every corrective step is in place and made public,” said board Chair Tyler Murphy. "We are committed to working with district staff to develop and implement a full corrective action plan and timeline with regular public status reports.”
