Notice of Vacant District 3 Board of Education Seat
On Dec. 4, members of the Fayette County Board of Education voted unanimously to choose four finalists for the District 3 vacancy:
- Danny A. Everett
- Jason D. Moore
- Amy L. Sohner and
- Kennedy D. Wells
Fourteen applicants had met the legal qualifications for service. The board met in closed session twice – on Nov. 27 and Dec. 4 – to review each one, assess their qualifications, and consider the community input about key characteristics and priorities for the new board member.
Next Steps
Student-led forum: Thursday, Dec. 7, at 5:30 p.m. at the John D. Price Administration Building, Room 150. Members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council will ask questions of each finalist during this event, which will be livestreamed on YouTube. The forum is open to the public, and members of the board will be in the audience.
Interviews with current board members: Monday, Dec. 11, at 4:30 p.m. in closed session.
The successful applicant will serve until the next general election on Nov. 5, 2024, and will have the opportunity – along with other interested candidates – to run for election to a four-year term. District 3 serves the eastern section of Fayette County, including the Hamburg, Chilesburg, and outbound Richmond Road areas.
Background
Under KRS 160.190, the school board must fill a vacancy by following a process for appointing a replacement, which must be completed within 60 days after the vacancy takes effect. The board reviews the applications of candidates who meet the statutory requirements for the position and then interviews selected candidates.
Responsibilities of a school board member include but are not limited to setting policy to govern the district, hiring, and evaluating the superintendent, levying taxes, and adopting the district budget. To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be at least 24 years old,
- Have been a Kentucky citizen for the past three years,
- Be a registered voter in board District 3,
- Not have a relative employed by the district,
- Have completed the 12th grade or have a GED certificate (transcript or certificate required by KRS 160.180),
- Meet all other legal eligibility requirements (KRS 160.180), and
- Complete the required annual in-service training.
