Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which people acquire and apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to understand and manage their emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. It's a foundational framework that helps students develop into well-rounded, capable adults.
Examples:
Through SEL skills, our students can build a solid foundation for a successful future where they will thrive in their academic, professional, and personal lives. SEL is fundamental in achieving the promises in our district's Portrait of a Graduate.
To ensure each student meets their full potential, FCPS uses the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment or DESSA system. This tool provides a comprehensive, data-driven approach to social-emotional learning. We administer this assessment twice a year to highlight and celebrate the positive skills each student has learned and ensure FCPS is supporting their continued growth.
At the elementary level, after getting to know their students, our classroom teachers complete an eight-question mini questionnaire about each child. For students who score at 40 or below, the teacher then completes the 40-question DESSA 2. This more detailed tool provides a deeper understanding of the student’s strengths and areas for growth. (Note: Parents of elementary students may opt out by submitting a request to their student’s school).
For our middle and high school students, FCPS offers the DESSA Student Self-Report. This tool provides gives them a chance to reflect and rate themselves within the student portal, where they can also engage in challenges and set goals to promote personal growth. Written parental consent is required for students to complete the questionnaire and access the student portal.
